Abstract
If 'groove' was originally a representation of the joy of human physical experience expressed through physical motion, then what has happened to the concept of groove since we have delegated this task to machines? Initially, drumming and musical groove were interactive, interpersonal phenomena rooted in one's physical experiences and memories. The introduction, and subsequently, widespread use of automatic rhythmical devices, such as the drum machine and music sequencing software, has problematised the definition of groove.
