Abstract
Europe continues to lead the world in international tourism. The World Tourism Organization reported 381 million tourist arrivals in 1998 (excluding day-visitors) in its European region, 2.5% above 1997, with receipts from international tourism totalling US$229 billion, 3.8% above 1997 (in current US$ and excluding International Fares, including receipts from day-visitors). Tourist arrivals and receipts are presented for the 45 countries and territories (by sub-regions), with revised 1998 totals for the other five WTO regions. The Word Travel and Tourism Council's estimates of the economic impact of the Travel and Tourism Economy in Europe and worldwide and projected growth to 2010 are also presented.
