Since 1986, the University Grants Commission in India has made it compulsory for all applicants to the position of Assistant Professor to take the National Eligibility Test (NET). This commentary looks at the contents and objectives of the NET and asks whether NET really contributes towards the improvement in the quality of teaching and training in journalism schools.
