Abstract
India embarked upon a journey into neoliberal globalization through its economic liberalization policies in 1991. The country has achieved rapid economic growth but inequalities have also grown. The media, which championed the cause of economic liberalization, have failed to critique the negative features of neoliberalism. Part of the blame may be ascribed to Indian journalism education, which stresses practical skills rather than an understanding of broader social issues. This commentary argues for a sharper focus on conceptual matters and the spirit of critique in media education.
