New implants are constantly being introduced to the orthopaedic community. Their steps from invention to general clinical use vary. Some devices have not been evaluated scientifically, others have undergone assessment in case series, and a few have been critically reviewed in randomized controlled trials. The reasons for these variations are discussed and a practical example is presented.
