After a short historical introduction several factors which may in the long run influence the results of joint replacements are listed. Amongst these, the topics fixation and materials are discussed in more detail. By discussion of various experiences of success and failure, the progress and improvements, but also considerable setbacks which have come about in the field of hip replacement are illustrated.
