Abstract

The third edition of Behaviour problems of the dog and cat has added some great improvements to the reliable components from the previous edition. The content has evolved well and reflects current thoughts in the field of behavioral medicine. Practical applications of behavior modification techniques are included.
Each chapter is color-coded along the tops of the pages with matching color patches on page numbers, making it very easy to navigate — a fantastic feature that more reference texts should use.
The client handouts and forms are useful, and make it easier for practices to educate their clients effectively. A nice feature is that these handouts are available for reference and printing online.
Thorough, informative chapters provide demarcated sections on canine and feline behavioral medicine. There is a well-structured chapter on pet selection and the genetics of behavior. This is a great resource for the veterinary team to assist their clients when choosing a pet.
Everyone should read the excellent chapter on how to achieve pet-friendly practice through the use of stress reduction in fearful pets.
This edition includes an expanded section on alternative therapies and the influence of nutrition on behavioral changes. A perspective on the Pageat (French) approach to canine behavioral medicine is also appreciated.
There were a few limited detractors in this book. Although internet links can go quickly out of date, it would have been of benefit to see a few more of the established web links in each of the reference sections.
Perhaps the most frustrating aspect of the text is the index. It is extensively detailed, with multiple sub-categories. This can be confusing to the reader who is trying to locate a specific topic. This is especially noteworthy when looking under dog, canine and puppy, as well as under cat, feline and kitten.
This is a reference book that every veterinary practice should have. Some sections are ‘quick reads’ to help institute a behavior protocol right away. At the same time, there is a lot of detail with numerous references to support the information. Overall, it is an excellent, well rounded behavior reference text.
