Abstract
The promotional process is a key component of the police personnel system, but has historically been problematic. Means of evaluating officers for promotion and the perceived relationship between pay and promotion compli cate the issue. Prior research examining promotion related to motivation indicated that promotions met some needs, but that salary was less likely to be met when compared to other needs. The current work builds on previous work by examining the relationship of actual promotion-seeking behavior and perceptions of the ability of promotions to satisfy employee needs. Findings indicate that promotion did not serve as a significant factor affecting employees' motivation.
