Abstract

The Journal of Advertising Education is planning a special issue on case studies in advertising education.
Case studies focus on actual problems and solutions educators face in the classroom and which students will face when they enter the workforce. They provide context and perspectives using real-world scenarios which identify a problem, analyze solutions, and help with decision making though exploring potential opportunities and identifying challenges. Using case studies help faculty prepare students for their profession and help students be better prepared for career expectations.
Case studies submitted for this special issue should focus on helping students and educators explore the variety of opinions, approaches, and perspectives regarding an identified problem (the case). Case studies can focus on evaluating the effectiveness of a case through implementation in the classroom or presenting a real-world case for faculty to use in the classroom.
Of special interest are cases that engage with the following topics: • Pedagogical innovations for incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) in classroom activities; • Pedagogical innovations for incorporating ethics in classroom activities; • Effectiveness and assessment of activities incorporating AI; • Effectiveness and assessment of incorporating student competitions (such as NSAC and Bateman) in classroom activities; • Effectiveness and assessment of ethics activities in the classroom; • Effectiveness and assessment of student-run agencies; • Creating and maintaining student-run agencies.
For cases evaluating effectiveness, the manuscript should do the following: (1) present the case and classroom activities conducted; (2) present a critical evaluation of what worked well and what pain points were encountered; and (3) present a reflection by the educator which encourages ways to embrace the activity being discussed and ways to overcome the possible pain points.
For cases to be used in the classroom, the manuscript should do the following: (1) Present the case from the perspective of a person involved in the case, ending with identifying the problem needing to be addressed. (2) Present opportunities and suggestions for how to engage the students in the discussion of the case. Think about how to get students to reflect on different perspectives and consider all sides. This engagement can be through individual interactions, small group interactions, large group interactions, or a combination of the types. (3) Present a method to encourage reflection. The authors encourage finding ways to address reflecting beyond the classroom and connecting the reflection to the profession.
