Abstract
This paper presents the results of a theoretical analysis performed to establish the effect of coatings on the radiative properties of silica fibers. The objective of the work was to determine if it would be possible to enhance the reflectance of silica fibrous insulation through the use of coatings on the fibers. The coating materials considered were alumina and silicon. The solution of the Maxwell's equations for perpendicular incident radiation on the fibers was used to compute their radiative properties for ra diation wavelengths ranging from 2 to 12 μm. The radiative properties were used to determine the reflectance of the fibers. Based on these results, assessments concerning the most appropriate coating material and coating thickness for increasing the reflec tance are made.
