Abstract
The atrium, an open courtyard within the house itself, is a feature of many California residences. This feature has esthetic value but it increases energy requirements in cold weather. Enclosure of the atrium in two Eichler-style residences in Sunnyvale resulted in reductions as large as 54 percent in gas consumption.
