Abstract
Experiments on parallelizing and vectorizing the main hot spots of RelBUU and QMD codes for the simula tion of heavy-ion reactions are presented. The investi gations concentrate on those routines of these codes which calculate the forces between the nucleons and "smear" the meson fields and nucleonic densities, re spectively. The studies were done on an IBM 3090/ 600J, a multiprocessor machine with six processors (each with a Vector Facility) and shared memory, using a prerelease of IBM VS Fortran 2.5 which provides par allelization support under MVS and CMS. Elapsed time parallel speedups of more than 5 and very low parallel overheads have been measured for the resulting opti mized code versions. A new algorithm for the "field smearing," necessary in RelBUU codes, with only a minimum number of floating-point operations, has been developed.
