Abstract

International Journal of Toxicology Issue 1 of 2024 contains something for everyone! Original articles include a nonclinical assessment of trans-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene, which is described as a “near zero global warming potential propellant for use in metered dose inhalation products”; a preclinical evaluation of a suture material (D-PLEX100) intended for use in juvenile surgeries; a preclinical evaluation of the human-identical milk oligosaccharide Lacto-N-triose II; and two reviews. I also provide my thanks to the ad hoc reviewers who assisted my Editorial Board with manuscript reviews in 2023; and, finally, the “crowning jewel” of Issue 1 for many readers is the collection of abstracts of posters presented at the 2023 American College of Toxicology (ACT) Annual Meeting in Orlando, FL. For those of you who registered for the ACT Annual Meeting, some of the complete posters presented at the meeting have been uploaded by the authors as ePosters and can be seen in their entirety on the Annual Meeting app.
In other news, the ACT Annual Meeting set a record for not only the number of abstracts submitted but also for the number of registered attendees. All attendees were invited to the Awards Ceremony, where we heard comments from the Dr. Paul Watkins (UNC Chapel Hill), the 2023 recipient of the ACT Distinguished Scientist Award in Toxicology. We also learned of a new award, established in honor of the late Dr. Harihara Mehendale (former Professor of Toxicology at the University of Louisiana, Monroe, and a previous Editor-in-Chief of International Journal of Toxicology). Dr. Mehendale’s wife, Rekha, attended the Awards Ceremony to announce the new Mehendale International Student Award. Mrs. Mehendale is shown here with two of Dr. Hari Mehendale’s trainees, Dr. Pallavi Limaye (left) and Dr. Tao Wang (right).
In addition, the Award for the Best Paper Published in International Journal of Toxicology in 2022 was announced. The winning paper 1 was authored by a large team of Pfizer Worldwide Research scientists and described the comprehensive nonclinical safety assessment of Nirmatrelvir in support of the development of the SARS-CoV-2 antiviral therapy PaxlovidTM. Dr. Karen Walters accepted the award on behalf of all authors. If you have identified an impactful paper published in 2023 in International Journal of Toxicology, please consider nominating that paper for the next Best Paper award (the publication year of the winning paper lags the year of the award presentation so that all papers published in the previous year can be considered). Nominations for this and all ACT-sponsored awards close on March 31 each year and can be submitted via the ACT website.
I will close by thanking my Editorial Board for their tireless work and ongoing support, and all ACT members who contribute to the journal in many ways, including nudging submissions to the Journal, submitting their own manuscripts, citing manuscripts published in the Journal, and/or serving as ad hoc reviewers. All of your efforts are greatly appreciated!
Sincerely,
Mary Beth Genter, PhD, DABT, ATS
Editor-in-Chief, International Journal of Toxicology
