Abstract

Opportunity knocks—and YOU have opportunities to recognize—or become—authors of papers published in International Journal of Toxicology (IJT)!
Please contribute to the selection of the American College of Toxicology (ACT) President’s Award for the best paper published in IJT. The winner is selected by the Publications Committee with input from members of ACT. Papers eligible for the award are those that were published in Issues 5 and 6 of the previous volume (2013) as well as Issues 1 to 4 of 2014. Although there is a formal process for nomination of a paper (see http://www.actox.org/journal/BPAnom.asp), I would be delighted to receive your nominations via a quick e-mail message if that is more convenient for you. Just mention the paper and provide a brief rationale as to why you believe your nomination deserves this recognition. The winner will be announced at the ACT Annual Meeting Awards Luncheon. I look forward to hearing from you by September 1 with your nomination. I assure you that the Publications Committee will take your suggestions seriously. Participation in this process is an easy and important way for those ACT members who want to become more involved to do so in a very meaningful way!

I would also like to mention that IJT is planning a new initiative—specifically we want to start publishing one issue of the journal each year devoted to overviews of CE courses and Symposia presented at the ACT Annual Meeting.
Given all of the work that goes into planning and presenting outstanding sessions for the ACT Annual Meeting, we are encouraging chairs of annual meeting CE courses and symposia to write articles summarizing their sessions for publication in IJT, ACT’s official journal.
Let’s face it—no one can be in more than one place at a time. Publication of a session overview article will allow many individuals who could not attend a course or symposium to see what was covered. In addition, this strategy is used by other societies to enhance member involvement in their society—without the need to run for an elected office or committee! Finally, this strategy would ensure a steady source of outstanding, publishable manuscripts for IJT—which would be a dream-come-true for your Editor!
Now, for some details on “how to get started.” Below are PubMed citations of two recent Symposium Overview articles by Ganderup (2012) and Buckley (2011). These articles were assembled by having each presenter write a brief summary of his or her presentation. Then, the session chair (or I) assisted in compiling the individual summaries into a single article for submission to IJT.
We plan to publish the session overview papers in a single issue devoted to these manuscripts. To provide the most benefit to the journal’s impact factor, these should be published as early in the year as possible. Therefore, the deadline for submission of session overview articles will be February 1, 2015, with the goal of publishing the articles in the May - June issue of IJT.
We want to gauge your commitment to providing a session overview article for publication in IJT. Please contact me by September 1 if you are strongly considering publishing your session. I would be delighted to meet with you at the ACT annual meeting at your convenience to assist you in getting your publication started. As your presenters are compiling their slides, perhaps they could also be drafting a summary for publication (many presenters prepare scripts for their talks, which could be a great starting point for a written overview of their talks).
Please contact me if we can be of any assistance as you prepare your Symposium or CE Overview articles!
I look forward to hearing from you by September 1 concerning nominations for the Best Paper award and publication of overviews of annual meeting sessions.
