Abstract

Dean Edwin Carter died of complications from his long struggle with Parkinson disease on Friday, May 21, 2010. Dean faced his illness with courage and grace and will be remembered for his humor and integrity. He was 68 years old.
Dean Carter was born in Pontiac, Michigan, on March 25, 1942. He received his bachelor's degree in chemistry at UC Riverside. After receiving his PhD in analytical chemistry at the University of Arizona, he worked as a research chemist with Shell in California for 3 years. He then returned to the University of Arizona, ultimately becoming a professor of pharmacology and toxicology. During his 30-year career at the University, he was honored with the Society of Toxicology’s Education Award in 1992 for his teaching accomplishments, as well as the Achievement Award from the Metals Specialty Section of the Society of Toxicology in 2008. He was also successful in initiating a Superfund Program at the University, which included an outreach program with Mexico.
Dean is survived by his wife of 45 years, Carolynn; daughter, Jennifer; grandson, Casey; sister, Myrl (Don), and several nieces and nephews. He was blessed with a brilliant and inquisitive mind that carried over into his love of philately and created a wonderful circle of friends at the University of Arizona and Mexico Elmhurst Philatelic Society International.
