Abstract
This study evaluated the effects of a back strengthening program for dancers enrolled in a university-based, professional training program. A within-subject research design revealed that the training program increased lumbar extensor strength 14% to 151%. Follow-up measurements taken up to a year after training showed that strength gains were sustained well above baseline levels. Corresponding increases in arabesque height, improvements in dancers’ ratings of their own strength, and a reduction in the number of classes and rehearsals missed due to back pain all suggest the importance of these strength gains. This study replicates prior research with non-dancers and demonstrates a potentially useful strategy for avoiding back problems among dancers.
