Abstract
To date, surprisingly little literature in the field of dance medicine and science has addressed the psychological needs and struggles of the large number of adolescents who participate in dance at all levels. This essay identifies some critical issues in contemporary adolescent development in the context of the dance world. The “normal” or predictable tasks of adolescence are detailed. Relevant research on dancers is reviewed. From a psychological perspective, dance professionals are challenged to examine their practices as educators and mentors in supporting this important life course passage.
