Abstract
Congress is considering funding dedicated truck lanes. It might make more sense to fund dedicated small-vehicle lanes for urban commuter traffic. These small-vehicle commuter lanes (SVCLs) would help mitigate many of today’s traffic-related problems. They would be less expensive to build and require smaller rights of way and thus save taxpayer funds. The available funds will build more traffic lanes that will ease traffic congestion. SVCLs would also nurture the use of small vehicles, which would mitigate this country’s growing energy concerns.
