Abstract
Recent changes in the health care delivery system have resulted in a shift of patients needing increasingly acute care to the home health care setting. As a result, home health care agencies are searching for ways to expand staff competencies and demonstrate patient outcomes. The clinical nurse specialist is educationally and philosophically prepared to meet the challenges confronting home health care today. This article reviews the traditional role components of the clinical nurse specialist and identifies creative ways in which the role can be successful in the home health care setting. Strategies for adapting to changing health care trends and promoting cost effectiveness are presented. Key words: home health care, clinical nurse specialist role
