Abstract
Although treatment protocols have been available and are proving to be effective against pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP), studies show that 60% of all human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) positive patients will progress to contract PCP as their primary opportunistic infection. Prophylaxis has proven to be effective in both prolonging survival and decreasing the occurrence of this sometimes fatal disease. These medications need to be accessible, affordable, and accurately instructed to patients. The home care nurse is a vital link to ensure that medical protocols are available and patients are compliant to increase their quality of life.
