This article reviews the four basic drug categories used to manage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. If the home health care professional becomes familiar with the mechanisms of action, dosing considerations, and patient education issues associated with these drug categories, management of the home care patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is enhanced.
