Abstract
When home health agencies employ supply chain practices that require nurses to order, handle, and deliver patient supplies, critical nursing resources are diverted from patient care. A model that enables full assessment of the nursing resources associated with a set of supply chain practices is presented. In this model, nurse involvement is measured in hours per nurse per year. The current state of nurse involvement in home health supply chains in the United States is quantified by considering survey data in the model. Results suggest the average amount of nurse involvement time per year is 170 hr. Stated another way, typical nurse involvement in supply chain functions is time that could have been spent conducting an additional 120 patient visits per nurse per year.
