Abstract
The introduction of a prospective payment system (PPS) into the home care industry has prompted agencies to explore new means of managing care. This article demonstrates the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) of Maryland’s approach to PPS through the creation of the Medicare Authorization Manager (MAM) model. The MAM’s focus is on helping the clinical staff think through the care processes and anticipate the end point. The development, implementation, and key outcomes are discussed, as well as lessons learned and next steps.
