Abstract
In the ever changing arena of home health care, there always remains the need to provide quality care and services in a cost-efficient and acceptable manner. Occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech-language pathology services have experienced similar workforce fluctuations to that of the nursing field. In an effort to remain a comprehensive home health provider, agencies may find themselves utilizing independent contractors. In considering this use, an agency must be knowledgeable about what defines an independent contractor. Once the decision has been made to go forward into contractual relationships, the agency must remain aware of federal and state regulations and evolving definitions of independent contractors. The hiring and management of independent contractors also become important issues.
