Abstract
As financial pressures played an ever-increasing role in all aspects of academic medicine, economic forecasting and analysis has concurrently increased in prominence. In this unique specialty, Uwe Reinhardt, PhD, has long been regarded as a pioneer and leader.
Born in Osnabrueck, Germany, Reinhardt has been at Princeton University since 1968, and currently serves as the James Madison Professor of Political Economy at the Woodrow Wilson School of Government. Widely viewed as one of the most knowledgeable health care economists, Reinhardt has played a major role in formulating novel market-based approaches to health care.
Interviewed in his office in Princeton, Reinhardt candidly discussed his appraisal of the managed care industry, the federal investigation of Columbia/HCA, and health manpower policy in the United States.
