Abstract
Despite rapid change in markets all over the country, California continues to be on the leading edge in several areas of health care finance and delivery. At the epicenter of much of this change is Stanford University, which recently announced a merger of its health system with the University of California, San Francisco.
Last year, Judith L. Swain, MD, left the University of Pennsylvania to serve as Chair of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. Swain, who received her medical degree at UC San Diego, is a renowned cardiologist whose research has focused on basic aspects of cardiovascular development. A former ASCI president and research leader, Swain now finds the business side of academic medicine competing for an ever increasing amount of her time.
Interviewed in her office at Stanford, Swain discussed the future of tenure in many institutions, the business of academic medicine in the 1990s, and recent merger developments with UCSF.
