Abstract
Bernadine Healy, MD, became president and chief executive officer of the American Red Cross in September. A cardiologist, she is the first medical doctor to hold the position. Dr. Healy has served most recently as the Dean of the College of Medicine and Public Health, and as Professor of Medicine at the Ohio State University. She spent two years as the Director of the NIH, and before that appointment was Chair of the Research Institute of The Cleveland Clinic Foundation. She is a Medical Consultant for CBS News and regularly contributes to PBS's “Health Week.” In an interview with JIM, Dr. Healy spoke about the state of clinical research today, the impending changes at NIH, and the future she sees for the American Red Cross.
