Abstract
The business communication instructor faces some serious motivational problems early each term. Students often are a little fearful of English or writing courses in general, but, worse, sometimes feel any such course is generally abstract, "artsy," and worthless.
We constructed the following handout to break down this resistance, and to show our students that our course is a practical preparation for their careers. This handout—which supplements a de tailed syllabus—not only introduces students to the course and its basic requirements, but also quotes practicing business managers on the real-world value of the skills the course teaches.
