Evaluating the Implementation of Technology in Nursing Homes

Abstract

Technology plays an important role in health care, but few studies have analyzed the implementation of technology in nursing homes. Fifty-two nursing homes were surveyed on the extent of their technology use, who was using the technology, and what or whom the use of technology was intended to impact. Characteristics associated with “high technology adopters” were identified and relationships between technology use, site characteristics, and quality outcomes were explored. Results showed that nonprofit and larger facilities utilize more technology, but a facility's technology score was not correlated with their star rating. EMR use was high, as was use of technology for increasing residents’ social interactions. Nursing homes who use more advanced technology and thoughtful use of social media can enhance communication with external constituents, such as families, prospective customers, and health care partners. The current study serves as a benchmark for facilities interested in enhancing their use of technology.
