Abstract
The efforts to accomplish the implementation of marriage for same-sex couples have had considerable success in the past few years. a minority of states are now able to offer this option as a result of either court action or legislative efforts. This movement will continue to be successful in the very near future, and may eventually result in the offering of marriage to all couples in all states. However, the culture of the states which oppose marriage for same-sex couples will continue to be problematic. in at least four groupings of states (southern states, rust-belt states, central plains states and mountain/western states) the differing cultures will ensure that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people continue to be treated unequally in many ways other than marriage. the irony of a same-sex couple finally being able to receive marital rights while simultaneously being discriminated against in housing, education, and employment cannot be overlooked…
