Abstract
This article reviews available literature on male inmate sexual assault and discusses the legal, moral, and practical reasons why correctional personnel should work to prevent instances of sexual assault and sexual pressure from occurring in prisons and jails. Typical offender characteristics and motivations are presented. Victim characteristics and common psychological reactions to prison sexual assaults are highlighted also. Lastly, specific staff roles in the prevention, intervention, and prosecution of prison sexual assaults are discussed.
