Abstract
The author analyzed electronic health records (EHR) systems in use in a dozen prisons or jails across the United States and defined 20 criteria for EHR in four categories: clinical interface; integration; logging, tracking, and reporting; and miscellaneous. The majority of EHR surveyed did not meet more than a few of the criteria. It should be feasible to incorporate these criteria in a single EHR. The author aims to provide criteria to help correctional health care administrators and practitioners make informed choices regarding EHR.
