Abstract
Current literature supports the effectiveness of nursing case management in reducing health care costs while improving quality of care in the general community. However, there is scant research on the necessity and effectiveness of nurse case managers in correctional settings. Without a body of literature supporting case management in corrections, prison administrators cannot easily justify the addition of nurse case managers to their budgets. This article presents a method to analyze whether the creation of nursing case management positions is financially sound. The Arizona Department of Correction’s Inmate Health Services Division conducted the analysis. Results and recommendations are presented.
