Abstract
Objective
A pilot project was initiated to determine the feasibility of using an electronic patient portal, MyChart, for documentation of patient-reported outcomes for those receiving treatment with an oral oncolytic.
Methods
Documentation of patient-reported outcomes within the electronic medical record before and after implementing questionnaires through the use of MyChart was compared. Additional outcomes that were assessed included patient confidence and satisfaction, adherence rate, side effects, and documentation of provider interventions.
Results
Our findings indicate that the use of an electronic patient portal significantly increased the number of encounters documented within the electronic medical record from 1.8% (
Conclusions
This pilot study indicates that the use of an electronic patient portal, MyChart, was feasible and improved documentation of patient-reported outcomes within the electronic medical record. Several information technologies and patient barriers were encountered throughout. Careful selection of patients who will embrace this technology is important.
