Abstract
Our cumulative knowledge about the determinants of substate integration is extremely limited. Few studies have examined support for integration across a variety of policy activities and mechanisms. Drawing on demand and supply side explanations for integration, this article tests a typology of substate functional integration. The correlates of functional integration are examined against previous research hypotheses in order to resolve ambiguities in our understanding of the adoption of functional integration.
