Abstract
As noted in this Guest Editors' Introduction, there was a vibrant surge in the 1980s and 1990s of scholarly work on violence against women (VAW) in sports-related contexts (SRC), but this wave receded over the past two decades and eventually disappeared. Recently, however, a small but growing international cadre of researchers is revisiting this major social problem. This prologue provides a brief overview of the current state of social scientific knowledge about VAW in SRC. Much more work is needed, and hopefully, this special issue will influence more scholars to develop a richer interdisciplinary understanding of the abuse of women in SRC.
