The Nativist Press: Demonizing the American Immigrant

Abstract

During the final decade of the nineteenth century, more than 100 nativist newspapers were published in the United States to oppose the surge in immigration and to preserve fundamental American values during a time when many people feared that those values were being eroded. This article looks at four representative nativist publications to illuminate common editorial themes manifested in this particular form of the dissident press.
