Secret Combinations and Collusive Agreements: The Scripps Newspaper Empire and the Early Roots of Joint Operating Agreements

Abstract

This study of E.W. Scripps' newspaper empire in the nineteenth century reveals an effort to form cooperative agreements that resemble anticompetitive practices common to other Gilded Age industries and that in some respects incorporate elements of modern joint operating agreements.
