Abstract
This study attempted to show whether a bar chart that accompanied a news story aided reader comprehension. Two versions of a graphic and story were tested against a story alone, a story and table, and a story with sidebar. Four accuracy scores, were computed, and in almost every case, subjects who read the story and sidebar had the highest comprehension scores. The results suggest that graphics need to be kept simple and that they need to contain more explanatory information
