Abstract
Competition's effects on advertising rates and cost per thousand were studied at 168 Michigan weekly newspapers in a replication of a 1980 Wisconsin study. Like the earlier research, this study found that competition was not related to ad rates. Among the Michigan newspapers, however, competition was related to cost per thousand. The results are consistent with studies of daily newspapers, suggesting that cost per thousand may be a better measure of advertising price than the absolute rate.
