Abstract
During early 1866 the editor of the Toledo Blade and his literary creation, Petroleum V. Nasby, offered a bridge between President Johnson and the vast majority of Republicans, still not won over to harsh Reconstruction policies. The author presents new evidence on Locke's attitude.
