In this essay on the role of journalistic lampooners who used the lever of humor and satire to budge public opinion, the authors concentrate on three writers of the Civil War and postwar period: Artemus Ward, Petroleum Vesuvius Nasby and Orpheus C. Kerr (pronounced “Orfice Seeker”).
