Abstract
When Editor Daniels attacked Prof. John Spencer Bassett of Trinity College for comparing Booker T. Washington to General Lee, the North Carolina editor seemingly was opposed to academic freedom and was anti-Negro too. The author shows how the case involved the entire fabric of Daniels' political life.
