Abstract
Matthew Lyon was convicted under the Sedition Act of 1798, was re-elected to Congress while in jail, and cast the vote which made Thomas Jefferson president instead of Aaron Burr in the disputed election of 1800. His stormy career is reviewed by a Louisiana State University journalism professor.
