Abstract
“The newspapers are after me again,” General William T. Sherman wrote to his wife after Thomas W. Knox of the New York Herald criticized the campaign at Vicksburg. Sherman promised to have Knox executed as a spy. Failing in this, the Union general still won a victory over his harassers.
