Abstract
As the individual “who has contributed most during the past decade to the defense of the freedom of information,” former U.S. Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas was selected as recipient of the 1979 Citation of Merit of the American Society of Journalism School Administrators.
Because of poor health, Justice Douglas could not attend the presentation ceremonies during the ASJSA Awards Luncheon Aug. 7 at the 1979 AEJ Convention in Houston. Accepting the award in his behalf was Professor Dagmar S. Hamilton, one of his close friends and associates both now and during the latter years of his 1939–75 tenure on the Court.
Professor Hamilton is on the faculty of the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin. On the following pages is the main text of her speech after the presentation.
