Vibration reduction methods and applications of biomimetic auxetic metamaterials: A review

Abstract

Negative Poisson’s ratio metamaterials (NPRM) have received widespread attention due to their unique mechanical behavior and counterintuitive material properties. Its lightweight, high strength, isotropic curvature, high energy absorption, impact resistance, vibration reduction, and variable magnetic permeability make it highly valuable in many fields. Due to its stretching expansion deformation characteristics, it is also known as auxetic metamaterials (AM). As a mentor to humans, nature has been providing a continuous source of design inspiration for researchers, and imitating and utilizing natural laws to help humans design metamaterial structures with excellent properties has long been a consensus among humans. Based on existing literature, this article analyzes and summarizes the design classification, mechanism, research methods, practical application ideas, and achievements of Bionic Auxetic Metamaterials (BAM) in the field of vibration reduction. This article introduces the research on biomimetic negative Poisson’s ratio metamaterial vibration reduction from three aspects: (1) the design method of biomimetic negative Poisson’s ratio metamaterial vibration reduction structure, including biomimetic concave structure, biomimetic chiral structure, biomimetic concentric structure, and biomimetic origami structure. (2) The experimental method for the vibration reduction performance of biomimetic negative Poisson’s ratio metamaterials is described, and the methods for obtaining key system parameters and evaluating performance indicators are elaborated from both static and dynamic perspectives. (3) Application of biomimetic negative Poisson’s ratio metamaterials in vibration reduction and isolation performance, including the shipbuilding industry, automotive industry, and aviation industry.
