Under elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) conditions, spur gearing vibration characteristics are influenced by both the combined meshing stiffness (CMS) and the tooth surface friction coefficient (TSFC). This paper examines the effects of both combined meshing stiffness and the tooth surface friction coefficient on the vibration characteristics of spur gear drives through the following investigations. The combined meshing stiffness is numerically computed, and the tooth surface friction coefficient is measured by the experimental method under elastohydrodynamic lubrication at first. Then, the bending-torsion coupling vibration model of the gear drive is established. Moreover, the gear drive vibration characteristics are analyzed. Lastly, the accuracy of the model is proved experimentally. The results indicate that gears’ vibrations intensify as the tooth surface friction coefficient rises. And it is prolonged for the system to reach stabilization. The oil film normal stiffness (OFNS) formed by the lubricant film helps to reduce gear vibration. Especially when working at high speeds, the vibration reduction of elastohydrodynamic lubrication for the gear drive is more pronounced. The influence of the tooth surface friction coefficient on gear drive vibration characteristics is more significant than the combined meshing stiffness. The experimental and calculative results are within 10% error, which certifies the precision of the simulation results. This article provides a theoretical basis for studying the vibration reduction performance of gear drives.
