A novel approach to active vibration suppression in multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) systems is proposed based on disturbance observers for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems. The disturbance observer presented here has a simple structure equivalent to that of the internal model control (IMC), so there is therefore no need for the system inversion. Techniques to design the proposed disturbance observer are given. Furthermore, examples are given to illustrate the design of disturbance observers for MIMO systems, and to prove their efficacy in suppressing vibration in MDOF systems.
