Abstract
Factor V antigen was evaluated in four patients with combined factor V and factor VIII deficiency. Two of these patients belonged to type I combined defect (pure asso ciation between factor V deficiency and hemophilia A). The other two belonged to type II (common defect of factor V and VIII). Factor V antigen was low in all patients and compared well with factor V activity levels.
Factor VIIIc coagulant was low in all patients. On the con trary Von Willebrand factor (vWF) was normal in all patients.
The presence of low factor V antigen in type I combined factor V and factor VIII disease had never been described be fore even though it could have been anticipated on theoretical grounds. Heterozygous for true factor V deficiency are known in fact to have a parallel decrease of activity and antigen level.
